Cabot has a strong safety culture that emphasizes personal responsibility and safety leadership. Cabot employees and contractors at all levels are expected to do everything reasonable and practical to protect personnel, property and the environment.

We provide the necessary resources to employees and contractors to perform their job safely, effectively and efficiently. Through formal training and on-the-job mentoring, we educate our employees about potential hazards associated with the job, equip them with the tools to assess and mitigate those hazards, and empower them to make the best decisions that will keep themselves and their coworkers safe.

We hold monthly safety meetings to provide required Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training and refresher courses, as well as to promote industry best management practices and address local needs. For example, during the South Region Electrification Project, we brought in electrical experts to specifically train field personnel on electrical grid installation requirements. Monthly field safety meetings also cover pertinent issues such as fatigue, lock-out/tag-out requirements, hazardous materials and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) safety, among other topics.

Cabot also holds regional quarterly contractor meetings to discuss EHS performance metrics and trends, risk mitigation and lessons learned. We frequently invite subject matter experts and local regulatory agencies to present on EHS related topics. The sharing of these lessons learned with our contractors provides knowledge to prevent similar incidents from reoccurring, thus creating a safer work environment for all.

 

 

Stop Work Authority

Cabot conducts all our operations under a Stop Work Authority (SWA) program that empowers employees to stop work if they discover a dangerous condition or other serious EHS hazard. All Cabot employees and contractors have the authority and obligation to stop any task or operation where concerns or questions regarding EHS hazards may exist. Once an SWA is in effect, work cannot resume until all stop work issues and concerns have been adequately addressed. Cabot will not tolerate any form of retribution or intimidation directed at any individual or company for exercising their authority as outlined in this program.

 

Focus on Safe Driving

 

Because the majority of work performed on behalf of Cabot involves driving to a facility, we carefully track and analyze vehicle safety statistics and trends. We have made significant effort over the past several years to educate employees and contractors on the risks of distracted driving and fatigue. After implementing the Smith System Driver Safety Training program, the preventable vehicle incident rate at Cabot dropped by nearly 80 percent. In addition to educational efforts, we are evaluating a variety of fleet management systems, which include in-vehicle monitoring software, backup cameras and other technologies.

Cabot is also focused on reducing public exposure to the risks of heavy truck traffic by implementing operational controls and safety measures, including installing water-disposal and oil-gathering systems and centralized tank batteries. Through these efforts, Cabot has eliminated approximately 185 truckloads per day of water and oil from public and private roadways. Cabot also uses traffic control personnel and truck route restrictions to minimize the impact of heavy truck traffic during completion operations.
